Births in the year:—Legitimate: Live births, 1,451; Stillbirths,
38. Illegitimate: Live births, 60; Still-births, 3.
Deaths in the year:—Legitimate Infants, 29; Illegitimate, Nil.
Of the 29 infants who died before reaching the age of 1 year,
23 died within the first 4 weeks of life, and of this number, 18
occurred in infants under 1 week.
The infant mortality rate for the Borough is 19.2.
INQUESTS
Thirty-eight Inquests and one hundred and thirty three Postmortem
examinations without inquests were held during the year.
Of these, 133 deaths were due to natural causes, 20 to accidental
causes, 14 to suicide, 3 to misadventure, and in 1 case an open
verdict was recorded.
