Of the 33 infants who died before reaching the age of 1 year,
23 died within the first 4 weeks of life, and of this number, 18
occurred in infants under 1 week. The increase in the number
of deaths of infants this year is due to an increase in deaths over
the age of 4 weeks, largely due to 5 deaths from Broncho-pneumonia
and Bronchitis.
The infant mortality rate for the Borough is 24.33 and this
figure is comparable with that for the rest of the country.
