STATISTICS AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF THE AREA
Area (in acres) 12,400
POPULATION
The population as estimated by the Registrar-General is
111,300.
The number of inhabited houses at the end of 1948, according
to the Rate Books, was 28,892.
Explanatory Note:—
Definition of "Houses"—Structurally separate dwellings including
flats.
The rateable value of the District is *£856,503
The net product (after allowing for cost of
collection) of a penny rate is £3,934
*Note.—The reduction in the rateable value of the District is due
to the fact that Electricity and Railway Undertakings
have been taken out of Rating.
SOCIAL CONDITIONS
The number of houses erected during the course of the year
was 335, which included 11 of the pre-fabricated type, 4 conversions
into flats, 58 rebuilding of war-destroyed houses, and
1 reinstatement of extensively damaged house.
