Public Offices,
Enfield, Middx.
11th June, 1943.
Annual Report of the Medical
Officer of Health, 1942.
To the Chairman and Members of the Urban District Council
of Enfield.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to place before you my Annual Report for the year 1942.
The Minister of Health has suggested that in this report the
opportunity should be taken to deal briefly with subjects in which
the public have shewn especial interest, e.g. Diphtheria Immunisation,
Scabies, Tuberculosis and Venereal Disease.
Diphtheria.
During the course of the year 4,309 individuals were immunised
against Diphtheria either by officers of the Council ni their capacity
as Maternity and Child Welfare Officers or Assistant School Medical
Officers, or by General Practitioners, to whom are supplied the
necessary materials, free of charge, for the immunisation of their
private patients, subject to a return being made to me of the names
and addresses of the persons so immunised. A large proportion
of the population is now immunised, in particular the child population,
and it is interesting to note that the number of cases of
Diphtheria which occurred in Enfield in 1942 was 15. This is the
lowest number of cases I have been able to record since I was appointed
Medical Officer of Health to the district in 1927, and is a
figure, moreover, which has not been bettered in the memory of
the servants of your Council.
Scabies.
In order to deal with cases of Scabies, alterations were made at
the St. Michael's First Aid Post in 1941 and during the year 1942,
617 cases were dealt with there by the personnel of the Civil Defence
Services stationed thereat.
