Annual Report of the School
Medical Officer
DENNIS H. GEFFEN,
M.D., B.S., D.P.H., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P.
For the Year Ending 31st December, 1937.
To the Chairman and Members of the Enfield Education Committee.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit my Annual Report on the health of the school
children of Enfield during the year ended 31st December, 1937.
The number of children on the School roll shows an increase of
468. In the last five years the elementary school population has increased
by 1,313. During this period, moreover, the Education
Committee has under-taken the inspection and treatment of secondary
school children, amounting to over 1,100 in number. The extent
to which the work entailed in the care of Enfield school children
has increased will, therefore, be realised.
Of great interest will be found Mr. Macky's report on the work
carried out at our Ophthalmic Clinic. Many of the children he
has treated have been referred to him by the Medical Officers of
your staff, their ophthalmic defects having been discovered during
the course of routine examination, or attendance at one of the
Council's Maternity and Child Welfare Clinics. The results that
have been achieved are highly satisfactory and demonstrate the value
of that co-operation between the medical services of the Council
which it has been the policy to foster during the past years. The
same remarks apply to Mr. Hogg's report on the School Aural Clinic.
The Committee will be interested to see the diversity of cases that
have been treated at both clinics.
At the time of writing this report a clinic is being erected in
connection with the new Bell Lane School. This clinic includes
accommodation for a dental surgery. It is hoped that the appointment
of a third dentist when the new clinic is opened, a policy upon which
the Committee has already determined, will do much to make it
