UNSOUND MEAT AND FOODS.

In this connection frequent visits were paid to the slaughterhouses, shops and markets, the number of inspections for this purpose being :—

Slaughterhouses989
Shops171
Stalls in Markets1,084
Food Preparing Shops38
2,282

Foodstuffs of various kinds purchased in London Markets and
outside the District were submitted for inspection by the Health
Department ; 34 parcels consisting of fish, meat, poultry, etc.
were found to be unfit for human consumption.
Certificates were given in all cases, so that the owner might
obtain replacement of the goods or return of the money from the
wholesale dealer.
Renewal of old Licences and plans for new Coffee Stalls are
available at the Surveyor's Office for inspection by this Department.
The best sanitary provisions available are enforced as to the removal
of refuse, water supply and drainage.
MOTOR AMBULANCES.
There are three Motor Ambulances for use in the District.
They are under the charge of Mr. A. H. Johnstone, the Fire Brigade
Superintendent.
SHOPS ACT.
While the duties of inspection under the Shops Acts are
carried out by this Department, we have now the assistance of
Mr. Provest who was appointed this year as Shops Inspector.
This has helped in bringing this work more up to date.
It is somewhat unfortunate that we have to face a drawback
in another direction. The Court inflicts such small penalties for
infringement of the Shops Act, even in regard to continued offences,
that there is little to deter the wrong doer from repeating the offence.
It was found necessary to take action during the year against
one shopkeeper for contraventions of the Act and fines were imposed.
The arrangements made with regard to the inspection of plans
for all new shops, by this Department is now being carried out,
and this naturally has meant an increase in the work, both in
respect of the inspection of the plans and the inspection of the
premises by the Inspectors under the Shops Act.
