Annual Report of the Senior
School Dental Surgeon
Mr. C. E. JAMES, L.D.S., R.C.S. (Eng.)
For the year ending 31st December, 1937.
To the Chairman and Members of the Enfield Education Committee.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit the Annual Dental Report for the year ending
31st December, 1937.
The elementary school population of Enfield was 10,844 in
March, 1937. There were in addition 1,140 secondary school children,
and at Nassau House Special School a further 36 children who reside
in Enfield and are entitled to treatment under the Enfield dental
scheme—a total of 12,020 children.
It was suggested by Sir George Newman, late chief Medical
Officer of the Board of Education, in his annual report for 1929, that
in a complete dental scheme one dentist could undertake the dental
care of 2,300 children and that in a partially complete scheme one
dentist should have under his care not more than 4,000 children. If
these figures are accepted, the inadequacy of the present dental staff
in Enfield of two dentists for 12,000 children is apparent.
The total number of elementary school children examined during
the year under review was 4,936 and the number treated 2,659. Fillings
and extractions for elementary school children amounted to 3,068 and
5,998 respectively.
The following table shows how these figures compare with the
corresponding figures of the two previous years :—
| Year. | Number Inspected. | Number Treated. | Number of Fillings. | Number of Extractions. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1935 | 4139 | 2577 | 3268 | 4339 |
| 1936 | 5597 | 3554 | 4871 | 6498 |
| 1937 | 4936 | 2659 | 3068 | 5998 |
