As in previous years, foodstuffs purchased in the various London
Markets were submitted for inspection, and 12 parcels were found
to be unfit for human consumption; these consisted of fish, meat,
vegetables, etc.
Certificates were given in all cases, as it was found that the
articles were unfit for the food of man, so that the owner might
obtain replacement of the goods or return of the money from the
wholesale dealer.
Four certificates in all were granted.
COFFEE STALLS.
As stated in previous reports, renewal of old Licences and the
plans for new Coffee Stalls are passed through this Department,
and up-to-date provisions are required with regard to the removal
of refuse, water supply and drainage.
We were quite justified in our statement in last year's Report
that this work would increase under the provisions of the Shops
Acts.
MOTOR AMBULANCES.
There are three Motor Ambulances for use in the District and
are under the charge of Mr. A. H. Johnstone, the Fire Brigade
Superintendent.
SHOPS ACTS.
The duties of the Inspectors under the Shops Acts are carried
out by this Department.
It was found necessary to take action during the year against
three shopkeepers for contravention of the Act, and fines were
imposed in each case. In one case it was the fourth occasion,
and in one other the second instance, on which proceedings had
had to be instituted.
Unfortunately in taking cases to Court we have not been able
to obtain the inflicting of such penalties as, in some cases, would
be sufficiently heavy to act as a deterrent to the contravention of
the Act.
