The following were the competitions:—
(1) Write a letter to a friend telling her how Diphtheria
can be prevented.
(2) The best made new knitted garment.
(3) The best garment made from new material.
(4) The best garment made from an old knitted garment.
(5) The best garment made from old material.
The garments were judged by Doctor Helen Garrow, and the
letters were referred to me. We found that the entries had improved
a great deal on those submitted in previous years. This indicates
that the mothers have been interested and followed the advice
given them at the Clinics.
Besides the Garden Parties, two very successful Fathers'
Meetings were held, one at St. George's Hall, when Doctor Olunie
Harvey, Medical Officer of Health for Southgate, gave a very
interesting lecture on "Happy Motherhood." The other meeting
was held at the Red Triangle Club, when a very helpful and
inspiring address on "Maternal Happiness" was given by Doctor
Dick Read.
Those who attended showed a great interest in the subject.
The lectures were followed by an interesting discussion.
CIRCULATION OF BOOKLET ON REARING OF
CHILDREN.
During the course of the year approximately 1 ,383 booklets
called "To Mothers and Fathers" were sent to mothers giving
birth to a child .
HOME HELPS.
The number of Home Helps supplied during 1936 was 88, as
compared with 52 in 1935 and 30 in 1934.
This service of the Council is appreciated by the mothers of
Enfield, who are being freed during the lying-in period from
domestic responsibility and given an opportunity of recovering
normal health.
MIDWIVES.
During the year a free midwife was supplied in 41 cases. This
figure compares with 36 during 1935 and 5 in 1934.
