Although to date I am unaware that any Council house tenant
was evicted on account of his income being above the scale, it is
probable that the result of this decision was that some tenants of
Council houses vacated their premises.
Throughout 1936 an attempt was made by means of transfers
to abate overcrowding, and at the end of the year the position was
as follows:—
(a) (i) Number of dwellings overcrowded at the end
of the year 299
(ii) Number of families dwelling therein 299
(iii) Number of persons dwelling therein 2,048
(b) (i) Number of new cases of overcrowding reported
during the year 67
(ii) Number of persons concerned in such cases 402½
(c) (i) Number of cases of overcrowding relieved
during the year 109
(ii) Number of persons concerned in such cases 797
(d) Particulars of any cases in which dwelling-houses
have again become overcrowded after the Local
Authority have taken steps for the abatement of
overcrowding Nil
(c) Any other particulars with respect to overcrowding
conditions upon which the Medical Officer of
Health may consider it desirable to report.
With regard to clause (e), transfers which resulted in the abatement
of overcrowding have continued during 1937 in co-operation
with the Treasurer's Department, and I am of the opinion that
further abatement has taken place.
The abatement of overcrowding that was found to have taken
place occurred as follows:—
Council Houses.
By removal 10
By marriage of children, or girls going into
domestic service 11
By death 1
