SOCIAL CONDITIONS.
The number of inhabited houses in the District has increased
by 9,418 during the course of ten years. This means that the
number of occupied premises which have to be inspected in
accordance with the administration of Acts delegated to the Health
Department has increased by nearly 70 per cent.
The rateable value has nearly doubled itself, whilst the sum
represented by a penny rate is more than double that of 1927.
During 1935, 1,953 houses were erected, and during 1936,
1,952. This makes a total of 3,905 houses built in the course of
two years, all of which, with the exception of 6, were erected by
private enterprise.
