As in previous years, foodstuffs purchased in the various
London Markets were submitted for inspection, and 37 parcels were
found to be unfit for human consumption ; these consisted of fish,
poultry, meat, vegetables, etc.
Certificates were given in all cases, as it was found that the
articles were unfit for the food of man, so that the owner might
obtain replacement of the goods or return of the money from the
wholesale dealer.
Fifteen certificates in all were granted.
COFFEE STALLS.
As stated in previous reports, renewal of old Licences and the
plans for new Coffee Stalls are passed through this Department, and
up-to-date provision is required with regard to the removal of refuse,
water supply and drainage.
There is the prospect that this work will considerably increase
under the provision of the new Shops Act.
MOTOR AMBULANCES.
There are two Motor Ambulances for use in the District and
both are under the charge of Mr. A. H. Johnstone, the Fire Brigade
Superintendent.
PETROLEUM.
All duties in regard to the storage of Petroleum are now carried
out under the Fire Brigade Superintendent, Mr. A. H. fohnstone.
SHOPS ACTS.
The duties of the Inspectors under the Shops Acts are carried
out by this Department.
The arrangement made last year with regard to the inspection
of plans for all new shops by this Department is now being carried
out, and this naturally has meant an increase in the work, both in
respect of the inspection of the plans and the inspection of the
premises by the Inspectors under the Shops Acts.
No legal action was taken during the year under the provisions
of the Shops Act, 1934, relating to ventilation and temperature of
shops and to sanitary conveniences.
REMOVAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
There is a weekly collection of refuse throughout the District„
but we are being asked in some quarters for a bi-weekly collection.
