ASSISTED MILK SUPPLY.
The quantity of fresh and dried milk supplied in necessitous
cases under the Assisted Milk Supply Scheme during the year was as
follows:—
Fresh milk 13,377 galls. Cost £1,395 15s. 6½d.
Dried milk 3,389 lbs. Cost £243 13s. 11¾d.
The corresponding figures for 1933 and 1934 were as follows:—
1933.
Fresh milk 19,860 galls. Cost £1,825 11s. 2½d.
Dried milk 3,683 lbs. Cost £273 19s. 0¾d.
1934.
Fresh milk 16,414 galls. Cost £1,481 4s. 3d.
Dried milk 4,201 lbs. Cost £311 3s. 4d.
It will be noted that the amount of fresh and dried milk is less
than in the two previous years, despite the fact that the scale has
remained practically constant. It may be assumed that it is due
to a higher standard of living in the District and the lessening of
unemployment.
Owing to the fact that the Public Assistance Committee was
increasing the payment to unemployed persons by 2s. 6d. weekly
during the winter months, the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee
agreed that from the beginning of November until the end
of April each year the Scale for the supply of free milk should be
raised by one shilling and six pence.
