SOCIAL CONDITIONS.
It is interesting to note that in ten years the number of
inhabited houses in the District has increased by nearly 50 per cent.,
that the rateable value has almost doubled itself, whilst the sum
represented by a penny rate is double that which it was in 1926.
During 1934, 1,238 houses were erected, and during 1935,
1,953. This makes a total of 3,191 houses built in the course of
two years, all of which were erected by private enterprise.
Building of this nature still continues, is principally of the
three bedroomed and two sitting-room type of house, erected for
sale to the occupier.
I am of the impression that very few, if any, houses are being
let on a yearly tenancy or lease.
