I am pleased to be able to record a steady expansion of the
Council's Maternity and Child Welfare services, fuller reference to
which will be found in the Report.
There is one fact, however, upon which the Council can congratulate
itself.
The Infantile Mortality for 1934 is 43.27, which compares with
an Infantile Mortality rate of 59 for the whole of England and
Wales and 63 for the 121 County Boroughs and Great Towns,
including London.
It is the lowest Infantile Mortality rate that Enfield has ever
recorded. It was in 1888 that Annual Reports were first introduced
and this figure ascertained.
This figure warrants further information on the subject of
Infantile Mortality. It represents the number of children who
died under the age of one year per 1,000 births, and the figure is
corrected to take into consideration children who rightly belong
to Enfield, whether they were born or died outside or inside the
District.
It is considered by some to be a very important indication of
the health of the district.
I am, therefore, setting out the Infantile Mortality rates since
1888, when the first Annual Report was published.
