Annual Report of the School
Medical Officer,
Dr. DENNIS H. GEFFEN,
M.D., B.S., D.P.H., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P.
For the Year ending 31st December, 1934.
To the Chairman and the Members of the
Enfield Education Committee.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to place before you my eighth report on the health of the
school children of Enfield.
In my report last year I referred to the fact that many children
were being referred from the School Ophthalmic Clinic for inpatient
and out-patient treatment at the Western Ophthalmic
Hospital, which institution had carried out the work gratuitously.
During the course of the year the Committee determined to make a
grant of £10 10s. per year to the Western Ophthalmic Hospital, on
condition that this work was continued and either in-patient or
out-patient treatment given to all children referred there from the
School Ophthalmic Clinic. It will be seen from the report of the
School Ophthalmic Surgeon that seven children were admitted to
the hospital for operation for squint. Following upon the operation
some of these children attended regularly for orthoptic exercises
to restore sight in the squinting eye. In addition, it will be noted
that two other cases were referred to the hospital for operative
treatment, as well as twelve other cases of complicated eye conditions.
This arrangement with the Western Ophthalmic Hospital
is working extremely well and has been of great advantage to those
school children of the district who are suffering from eye disease
of such a nature that it cannot be dealt with satisfactorily at a
school clinic. The report of the School Ophthalmic Surgeon is full
of interest, and the Committee may rest assured that Enfield
children are receiving every attention concerning the conditon of
their eyes.
