As in previous years, foodstuffs purchased in the various
London Markets were submitted for inspection, and 87 parcels were
found to be unfit for human consumption ; these consisted of fish,
fruit, meat, vegetables, etc.
Certificates were given in all cases, as it was found that the
articles were unfit for the food of man, so that the owner might
obtain replacement of the goods or return of the money from the
wholesale dealer.
Fourteen certificates in ail were granted.
COFFEE STALLS.
The question of renewal of licences for old Coffee stalls, and
also the plans for new ones, are now passed through this Department,
and more up-to-date conditions are required than have
been in previous years, that is, with regard to the removal of refuse,
water supply and drainage.
MOTOR AMBULANCES.
There are now two Motor Ambulances for use in the District
and both are under the charge of Mr. A. H. Johnstone, the Fire
Brigade Superintendent.
PETROLEUM.
The work in connection with the storage of Petroleum is still
on the increase, and, as previously stated, all new petroleum stores,
including pumps and tanks, are, at the time of installation, under
inspection by one of the Sanitary Inspectors. In every case the
proper air test is applied to the tanks before permisssion is given
for them to be covered over.
One of the duties of this Department is the examination of all
plans of proposed garages sent to the Engineer and Surveyor's
Department, and reports are made on them to the Plans and Byelaws
Committee for submission to the Council for approval.
With regard to applications for the storage of petroleum, this
duty has been further extended by the fact that Bye-laws have been
made by the Middlesex County Council, and more extended consideration
has to be given to the whole matter.
SHOPS ACT.
The duties of inspectors under the Shops Acts are carried out
by this Department.
There has been no need for serious action during the year.
