“During 1929, 48 routine visits were paid by Mr. Villar
“ to the various farms in the Urban District of Enfield, and
“1,178 examinations of cows and other bovine animals were
“made. As the result of these examinations 4 cows were
“found to be tuberculous within the meaning of the
“Tuberculosis Order, and these were slaughtered.
“Seventeen other cows were found to be suffering from
“ various diseased conditions, and the milk from these animals
“was, on Mr. Villar's instructions, withheld from sale.
“In addition to the four tuberculous cows mentioned
“above, the attention of the County Council's Veterinary
“Inspectors under the Tuberculosis Order was drawn to the
“existence of two other cows suspected by their owners to
“be suffering from tuberculosis. Of this number, one was
“deemed to come within the terms of the Order and was
“ slaughtered.
“Fifty-nine samples of milk were taken from producers
“or retailers in the Urban District of Enfield in the course
“of the year and were submitted to animal inoculation at
“the Lister Institute. In 5 instances living tubercle bacilli
“were found. This work was a means of detecting 3 further
'' cows upon Enfield farms who were found to be yielding
“ tuberculous milk, and these also were slaughtered.
“It will thus be seen that, in all, eight tuberculous cows
“ were removed from Enfield herds in 1929.
“Yours faithfully,
•/ '
“ J. TATE,
County Medical Officer.“
From the above report it will be seen that 8 tuberculous cows
were removed from Enfield during the year 1929. This appears
to me a large number, and it is to be hoped that the activities of
the County Council will result in improved conditions in subsequent
years.
