Removal of House Refuse.
Our experience with the two 2½-ton Edison Electric Vehicles
in use since March 1921 and August 1923 continuing very satisfactory,
a third vehicle of the same make was, with the approval of the
Ministry of Health, obtained and commenced working on 2nd June
1925.
We have found that these vehicles contribute considerably to
the efficiency and reduction of the cost of this work.
In addition to these electric vehicles, four horsed vehicles are
regularly employed.
A good quantity of the refuse was disposed of in the brickfields,
and the remainder taken to the Council's Depots. Carterhatch Lane
and Old Road, where it is levelled and covered with earth, which
afterwards becomes useful for allotments.
The quantity of refuse collected during the year was approximately
11,415 tons, and the cost £4,443, or 7/9d. per ton of refuse
collected and disposed of.
Quantities of trade refuse were also collected from business
premises, for which a charge was made.
SALVAGE.
It is still difficult to dispose of waste materials, and we were
only able to sell 48 tons, 11 cwts, 3 qtrs , of waste tins, etc., collected
from the refuse at 12s. 6d. per ton, the amount realised being £27
12s. 7d. 849 tons of sifted ashes and breeze were disposed of to a
local brickinaker, for which we were paid £31 16s. 9d.
