"I communicated with the Medical Officer of Health,
"and the following is a copy of his reply:—
"4th August, 1913.
"Dear Sir,
"I thank you for your letter ye A.B. of Hertford Road, Enfield.
"I saw Dr. G., who saw the above, and he informs me he saw
"the child once or twice and that it appeared to him to be
"General Malaise, etc.
"The child came down ill, and stayed a few days, and they only
"asked him to see the child if it was able to travel.
"My district is free from A. A. Poliomyelitis. We had five

"Should be glad if you can give any further information."
"Yours faithfully,
"(Signed) A.T.M."
"E.Y.—This child appears to have been ill on about July 10th,

"W.D.—Dr. F. states ' The mother brought this child to my
"surgery on August 13th, stating that on August 8th he went for
"a long walk and on the following day was taken bad with what
"appeared to her to be Acute Influenza, so she nursed him, but
"finding on the 13th instant he could not stand, brought him to
"me ; there was then no temperature.' "
"I have since found out that August 4th (Bank Holiday),
"the boy was at High Beech, Epping Forest, all day, where there
"was a large crowd, and his mother had a vivid recollection of his
"swallowing a fly."
"H.F.—This boy was taken ill and seen by Dr. C. on August 7th,
'' who states that his temperature was 101°, that he had an ulcerated
