become widely known. It is. however, a very difficult Act to operate,
as it is necessary to prove that a particular noise is a statutory
nuisance before any action can be taken. This is, of course, a matter
of opinion which will vary very considerably between individuals.
The use of a noise level meter to assess the volume of the noise is
of some help, but no guidance has been given as yet as to the volume
of noise which may constitute a nuisance.
In conclusion I would express my thanks to every member of the
Public Health Department for their support and work during the
year. In particular I must thank Mr. Smith, my deputy, for his
efforts and assistance during the year.
I also wish to thank all other officers of the Council for their
assistance and co-operation.
W. K. Pickup,
Chief Public Health Inspector
