biscuits a day and it speaks highly of the organisation of factories
with such a high output that such complaints are as very few.
MILK BOTTLES
Once again I must comment on the habits of those members of the
public who fail to appreciate that the sole purpose of a milk bottle
is that of holding milk. Complaints received during 1962 concerned
cement in bottles and during November bottles with carbon deposits,
indicating that they had probably been used to launch rockets early
in the month.
ICE CREAM
Three applications were received for the registration of premises
for the sale of ice cream. The premises and equipment being satisfactory
the applications were granted.
Ninty-one samples of ice cream were obtained and submitted for
bacteriological examination. All the samples were reported Provisional
Grade 1.
This is the fourth successive year that I have been able to report
all the samples of ice cream taken during the year as being Grade 1.
There are no premises manufacturing ice cream for sale in the
district. All ice cream is obtained from large wholesale firms.
HOUSING
Clearance Areas
There were at the beginning of 1962 eleven confirmed clearance
areas affecting 94 houses, only a few of which had been demolished
although the greater majority were vacant, the three clearance areas
made in 1961 affecting seven houses had not been confirmed. During
1962 the eleven confirmed clearance areas were demolished and
public enquiries were held on the three areas made in 1961, that is
East Barnet Road, clearance areas Nos. 1 and 2 and Lancaster Road
clearance area No. 5.
The result of the enquiry on East Barnet Road clearance areas Nos.
1 and 2 was deferred until the position with regard to town planning
could be clarified. It appears that before the situation can be cleared
a further public enquiry dealing with the town planning position will
be necessary. The other public enquiry on Lancaster Road clearance
area No. 5, being Nos. 11—13, Lancaster Road, but including No. 15
as grey land, resulted in the minister not confirming the order although
the Minister's inspector had found that both of the houses included in
the clearance area were unfit and recommended their clearance.
At the end of 1961 the Medical Officer of Health had represented
to the Council a further clearance area being Mill Corner clearance
area affecting three cottages. No decision on this area had been
