Many complaints have been received regarding the dumping
of refuse on vacant plots of land in various parts of the district.
Where the refuse was of such a nature that it was likely to cause
a nuisance the owner of the land was requested to have it removed,
but in many cases the refuse consisted mainly of old bedsteads,
oil drums and other similar innocuous material, and although this
gave the land an untidy appearance, if the owner refused to do
anything we had no power to insist on its removal.
In addition to the serving of notices for repairs to property
many owners and agents were interviewed in cases of difficulty,
and every effort was made to get the required work executed
without undue delay.
The number and nature of the inspections made were as
follows:—
Under the Public Health Acts (nuisances, sanitary
defects, water supply, infectious diseases, etc.) 1755
