12. RECUPERATIVE CARE
Recuperative care is provided under Section 28 of the National Health Service Act,
1946, at the request of general practitioners where it is felt that a patient who has
recovered from a recent illness would benefit from a period of recuperative care before
resuming his normal occupation. The patient must be fit to travel and not in need of
medical or nursing care. The normal recuperative care period is two weeks and in some
cases this is extended if the doctor attending the home recommends that it would be
beneficial to the patient.
Arrangements are made for the persons approved to stay in a home chosen from approved
lists. The home must be run by a state registered nurse and a doctor is required to be
available in the event of emergencies. Arrangements are made for transport to be
available to and from a main line station if this is recommended by the general practitioner.
The cost of the service to the patient is £5. 15s. per week but the recipients may
be assessed according to income if they feel unable to pay this amount. Details of
arrangements made during the year are given below:-
