2. INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Details of the incidence of the various notifiable infectious diseases and the
action taken during the year to prevent their spread is as follows:-
ANTHRAX
No cases were notified during the year.
CHOLERA
No cases were notified during the year.
DIPHTHERIA
No cases were notified during the year.
DYSENTERY
164 cases were notified during the year of which 53 were confirmed bacteriologically.
In all these the organism was Shigella Sonne.
FOOD POISONING
115 cases were notified of which 71 were confirmed bacteriologically. The organisms
were as follows:-
Salmonella Typhimurium 20
Other Salmonellae 51
INFECTIVE JAUNDICE
This disease was made notifiable on 1st October, 1968, but infectious hepatitis has
been notifiable in the borough since November, 1965. The number of cases notified
during the year was 45 of which 23 were admitted to hospital. In conformity with the
Council's control measures public health inspectors visited the households and gave
advice on the appropriate hygiene measures which should be adopted and arrangements were
made for the patient's linen and clothing to be disinfected by boiling or autoclaving
wherever possible.
MALARIA
One case was notified during the year, which was believed to have been contracted
abroad.
MEASLES
1,589 cases were notified during the year.
ACUTE ENCEPHALITIS AND ACUTE MENINGITIS
There were 10 cases of acute encephalitis and 8 cases of acute meningitis notified
during the year.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM
No cases were notified during the year.
