over the figure for 1953. At the end of the year 58 were on the
waiting list for 1955 as compared with 36 at the beginning of the
year.
1954 was the first full year in which cases from Acton have
been seen and while there has been a small increase in the number
of cases referred from Ealing, the Acton cases account for almost
the whole of the increase in the number referred and the number on
the waiting list. So far there has been no appreciable change in the
average time between being referred and being seen.
Disposal.
(1) Treatment.
Of the new cases, 100 were recommended for treatment or
remedial teaching, and 21 were waiting from 1953. At the end of the
year 31 cases were awaiting treatment in 1955. This increase,
though numerically small, is more serious than the increase of the
number on the diagnostic waiting list. It means that the time spent
by patients waiting for treatment is going up.
(2) Special Recommendations.
In 37 cases recommendations were made for action outside our
own Centre. 21 children were recommended for ascertainment as
Maladjusted Pupils, and 16 were sent to a hospital for further
investigation or treatment.
II. Cases seen before 1954.
26 cases who began treatment in 1954 had been seen earlier
and 53 cases who were attending for treatment in 1953 continued
in 1954. In addition 47 cases who had attended for regular treatment
earlier remained under supervision (i.e., making occasional
attendances) in 1954.
A number ceased to attend in 1954, leaving 61 treatment cases
and 35 supervision cases current at the end of the year.
A few children seen in 1953 or earlier were recommended for
Schools or Hostels for Maladjusted Children. As the year went on,
some of those coming for treatment were found to be in need of
boarding school education, and four recommended at the diagnostic
interview for a School for Maladjusted Children were taken off the
list, three because their circumstances had changed, one because
the parents would not agree to our recommendation. (Table VI
shows in detail all the special recommendations made or put into
effect, including those carried over from previous years and those
that modify the original recommendation).
