SECTION 4.
GENERAL.
MASSAGE AND SPECIAL TREATMENT ESTABLISHMENTS.
Two new licences were granted to persons already registered
on removing from one address to another.
Four persons were again granted exemption from registration
by virtue of being members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.
At the end of the year there were 25 establishments in the
Borough.
NURSING HOMES.
Three nursing homes were closed during the year and there
were then eight left.
Old Court Nursing Home, for many years established in
Hanger Lane, moved to Hillcrest Road and was re-registered there.
The Hanger Lane premises were taken over and endowed by the
Motor and Cycle Trades Benevolent Fund for members of the Fund
and their relatives and dependents, mostly old people who, while
not sufficiently ill to be in hospital, nevertheless need nursing care.
The home is now known as the Nuffield Nursing Home.
HEALTH EDUCATION.
As in previous years the leaflet display trays in the Town Hall
vestibule and in the Libraries were maintained.
The most popular leaflets were those humorously illustrated in
colour by Fougasse entitled Good Health, Calling the Doctor, Just
Nerves, Be Kind to Your Stomach, Advice to Dyspeptics, War on
Disease, A Visit from the Radio Doctor and Internal Hoarding.
Other leaflets distributed, at the appropriate season, gave
advice on Measles, Poliomyelitis and Influenza.
Various leaflets such as Kitchen Hygiene, Elderly People,
Carefree Feet, Cafe Quiz, Small pox Vaccination, Diphtheria
Immunization, and Houseflies, were also in demand.
There is no doubt that the range of subjects embraced and the
Borough wide distribution of the leaflets are a valuable means of
bringing information and advice to a great many people.
All these leaflets are published by the Central Council for
Health Education, and its official monthly journal, Better Health,
is distributed in the same way.
