The latest reports from the County Council on the analysis of
samples taken from the River have indicated an improvement in
the North Circular Road and Perivale areas, but much remains to
be done and the work is proceeding.
Atmospheric Pollution.
One hundred and eighty seven smoke observations were made
by the Sanitary Inspectors during the year. In two cases representations
were made regarding :
(1) the emission of grit and sooty particles in such quantities
as to be a nuisance, and
(2) the emission of smoke in such quantities as to be a nuisance.
In the first case, a special type of grit arrestor was inserted
into the boiler smoke stack and the results were successful in
preventing further nuisance. In the second case, after the service
of a Statutory Notice, several modifications to the boiler plant were
carried out and these included the installation of a patent improved
secondary air device and the proper operation of this equipment
together with frequent visits to educate the staff in its use, has
proved successful.
Further complaints regarding the emission of grit and dust
from a factory in the Long Drive area of Greenford were received
during the year. Upon the instructions of the Public Health
Committee an atmospheric pollution gauge was erected in the area
and the contents analysed at monthly intervals over a period of
three months. The Analyst's reports were considered by the
Public Health Committee and a further approach was made to the
firm concerned regarding the fitting of grit arrestors to the cupola
stacks serving the foundry. The work was commenced towards the
end of 1954 and was completed early in 1955. It is hoped that the
steps taken will be effective in preventing further annoyance to
residents in this area.
Moveable Dwellings.
Although the nuisances arising from the caravan problem in
the Northolt area have lessened during the year trouble is still being
experienced by the residents in properties adjoining the Council's
Lime Trees Estate at Northolt, through nuisances and annoyances
caused by the dwellers in these caravans. Notwithstanding the
periodical removal by force of caravans from this land they return
within a short period, necessitating the repeated instigation of the
