Scarlet Fever.
There was an increase on the previous year, 287 notifications
compared with 238 in the previous year. It is still of the very mild
type.
Smallpox.
Three persons who may have been contacts of cases which
occurred in the The Hague area came to Ealing. They were kept
under uneventful surveillance.
Tuberculosis.
The number of cases notified this year was 132 compared with
205 in the previous year. This is truly dramatic, representing a drop
of no less than 36% on last year's notifications.
The number of deaths dropped from 29 in 1953 to 20 this year
and though these figures, being small, may not look so impressive,
the acceleration in the fall of deaths from tuberculosis has been
maintained, the present number showing a drop of 32% compared
with 1953—almost as big as the drop in notifications.

The number of new cases of Pulmonary Tuberculosis notified
was 132, compared with 205 in the previous year, while the number
of cases of Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis was 17 compared with 20
in the previous year. There was a total of 20 deaths, (19 Pulmonary,
1 Non-Pulmonary) compared with 28 Pulmonary, 1 Non-Pulmonary
in the previous year.
