The Orthopaedic Surgeon examined 6 pupils and four of them
made 40 attendances at the Centre for massage and special
exercises.
Forty-one children made 117 attendances for treatment of
Minor Ailments.
The following is the report of the School Dental Surgeon :—
" The pupils at the Secondary Schools are not inspected until
late in the year and consequently the treatment is not finished during
the current year, but is carried on to the following year for approximately
twelve weeks.
The work is mostly of a conservative character and any
extractions that have to be done are mostly for regulation purposes.
The total number of extractions amounted to 392, and of this
number 300 were of permanent and 92 were of temporary teeth.
The number of teeth filled totalled 1,039, this figure being
greater than in the preceding year when 904 fillings were inserted.
Orthodontic appliances were fitted in two pupils and one
denture was fitted for a pupil who had his front teeth extracted.
Other operations involved scaling and gum treatment, adjustment
to appliances previously fitted, root treatment of front teeth
and other minor operations.
All this treatment was given to 689 pupils out of a total of 932
found to require treatment.
EMPLOYMENT OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS.
The number of children examined in connection with their
employment out of school hours was 328 and of this number 7

These children are submitted to re-examination when routine
medical inspection is being carried out in their school and if it is
found that employment is detrimental to their health, sanction
to employment out of school hours is withdrawn. At routine
inspection 39 children were found who had not obtained the
necessary permission, and 7 of these were found to be unfit for
employment.
