The total deaths from the various causes are indicated in
Table IV. It will be seen that heart disease was responsible for
the greatest number of deaths, namely, 300, giving a death-rate of
2.44 per thousand of population; the next, cancer with 191 deaths,
giving a death-rate of 1.56; and then bronchitis and pneumonia
with 125 deaths, giving a death-rate of 1.02.
Of the infectious diseases, scarlet fever caused one death,
giving a death-rate of 0.01 per thousand of population ; diphtheria
caused two deaths, giving a death-rate of 0.02 ; measles 5 deaths,
giving a death-rate of 0.04; whooping cough 3 deaths, giving a
death-rate of 0.02; influenza 40 deaths, giving a death-rate of
0.33 ; and tuberculosis 79 deaths, giving a death-rate of 0.64.
