Diphtheria.—Diphtheria showed an increase of 39 cases over
the previous year, and the number, 129, was the highest since 1922.
The cases occurred during the months of the year as indicated in
Table VI. It will be noticed that the two months with the greatest
number of cases were February and March. Apart from these
two months the number of cases was fairly well distributed throughout
the year, but with a surprisingly low number, 4, in December.
For a town of the population of Ealing the number of cases of
diphtheria may be considered moderate. The diphtheria case-rate
for the Borough was 1.24 per thousand of population, this rate
comparing most favourably with the case-rate for England and
Wales, which was 1.84.
During the year there were eight deaths from diphtheria,
giving a death-rate of 0.08 per 1000 population and a mortality
rate of 6.2 per cent. of cases notified. The death-rate is below
those for England and Wales and for London, and that for the
Great Towns, which are respectively 0.09, 0.10 and 0.10.
