SPECIAL REPORTS.
When the Borough boundaries were extended on the 1st
October of the year under review it became necessary to extend
the School Medical Service of the old Borough to the added areas.
A Special Report, which is appended, was submitted to the
Education Committee for their consideration. The recommendations
contained in this Report having been approved by the Committee,
steps were taken to bring the recommendations into operation.
It was not possible, on account of the lack of staff and office
accommodation, to extend the whole scheme to Hanwell and Greenford
before the end of the year. Medical inspection could not be
carried out in the newly added schools but temporary School
Clinics were opened, one at the old Council Offices, Hanwell,
for the Hanwell schools, and one at Betham's School, Greenford,
for children from Greenford. At these temporary Clinics children
were examined and treatment was given as far as practicable.
The extent of the examinations made at these Clinics is indicated
in tables which are appended.
Report on School Medical Inspection and Treatment
in the extended Borough.
"The whole of the school medical work in the added areas
has been brought into line with that in operation in the Borough
previous to the extension of the boundaries School medical
inspection and treatment in Hanwell and Greenford were carried
out by the Middlesex County Council and in merging these in
the Borough scheme a complete reorganisation has to be effected.
The extent of the work in the added areas may be gauged by considering
the new school population,
"The schools in the area of the old Borough had on their
rolls on the 29th October of this year 6,478 children, those in Hanwell
on the same date 2,775 children and Betham's School in Greenford
230 children. Thus, in the extended Borough there is an increase
in the school population of 46 per cent. In this connection it is
interesting to note that the increase in the total population by
the extension of the boundaries is 33 per cent.
