(j) Crippling Defects—At the end of the year there were 57
school children classified as suffering from some form of crippling.
Three of these were in Special Residential Schools and 54 were
attending elementary schools. There were no cases kept at home.
Particular care is taken to make this list a complete one so
as to keep the children under supervision and to supply treatment
for them through the Orthopaedic Scheme. In ascertaining these
children, the teachers, school attendance officers, and the Child
Welfare Department give assistance by furnishing early information
of any crippled children coming under their notice.
All crippled children are examined at least once a year to
determine their exact physical condition, in order that treatment or
special exercises may be recommended or provided.
