Tuberculosis.—In Table IX are indicated the new cases of
pulmonary and non-pulmonary tuberculosis notified in the year
and the number of deaths in the various age-groups. There were
39 deaths from pulmonary and 13 deaths from non-pulmonary
tuberculosis, which give death-rates of 0.57 and 0.19 respectively,
or a total tuberculosis death-rate of 0.76 per 1,000 of population.
In three instances the first information of the case of tuberculosis
has been on the death of the patient, either through the
medical attendant notifying or in the weekly death returns from
the Registrar-General. When this has occurred the medical
attendant has always been communicated with to avoid repetition
of the omission to notify.
No action has been called for under either the Public Health
(Prevention of Tuberculosis) Regulations, 1925, or Section 62 of
the Public Health Act, 1925.
After the notification of a case of tuberculosis is received, a visit
is made by the Sanitary Inspector to ascertain the history and mode
of life of the patient, his occupation and sleeping accommodation,
and to investigate the sanitary condition of the house. When
deemed desirable the Tuberculosis Officer is communicated with—
particularly if it is thought, on account of the home circumstances,
that Hospital or Sanatorium treatment is desirable. Sanitary
defects are attended to in the usual manner by the service of notices
to remedy on the owner.
