The following Census figures indicate the increases in the
population of Ealing in successive decades:—
Census, 1881 15,764
„ 1891 23,965
„ 1901 33,040
„ 1911 61,222
„ 1921 67,755
The area of the Borough extends to 2,946 acres, and the
density of population, or the number of persons per acre, is therefore
23.0. The Lammas Ward is the most densely populated
with 53.9 persons per acre, the Manor Ward coming next with 43.0,
and the Mount Park Ward is the least populated with 9.4 persons
per acre.
For 1924 the population is estimated at 68,370. The natural
increase of population, or the excess of births over deaths, is 221.
The Birth-rate continues to show a decline in successive years,
a decline which is evident all over the country. For 1924 the
rate is 14.3 compared with 15.6 for 1923 and 16.2 for 1922, and
is in marked contrast to the pre-war years as will be evident on
consulting Table II. The birth-rate for Ealing is low compared
with those for England and Wales and for London, which are
18.8 and 18.7 respectively.
The Death-rate is slightly greater than in the previous year,
11.1 compared with 10.6 for 1923. A similar increase over the
previous year was experienced by England and Wales generally
and by London. The rate for Ealing, however, compares very
favourably with that for England and Wales, which is 12.2, and
that for London, which is 12.1 per 1.000 of population.
