LEYS ORTHOPAEDIC CLINIC
This is an out-patient clinic of the Ilford and Barking Group Hospital Management
Committee which is located at the Leys Clinic. Children referred from the infant welfare
clinics and the school health service attend here for treatment, as well as other patients
referred by general practitioners and other sources.
Mrs. E. Ottley, the physiotherapist, reports as follows:—
“ The 653 patients who attended for physiotherapeutic treatment during 1962
comprised 257 adults, 296 school children, and 100 children below school age. 10.402
treatments were given.
Mr. A. M. A. Moore, F.R.C.S., the orthopaedic specialist attended once every
four weeks. He saw 212 patients, 77 of whom were new.
Children attended in their respective age groups, boys and girls were treated separately
in classes for (a) feet, (b) posture, (c) breathing; all children under school age being
treated individually. I can only repeat it is a great pity that so many children, girls and
boys are allowed to wear such unsuitable shoes. I feel the blame for many of the foot
deformities one sees in children's clinics today must lie with the shoe manufacturers.
Surely it is possbile for them to produce a reasonably priced well shaped shoe for school
children ? I find many parents are only too willing to purchase such shoes but are quite
unable to obtain them.
No waiting list is kept, all patients (adults) are seen on receipt of referral forms or
letters from their own medical practitioners. Children are usually referred from school
clinics or infant welfare clinics.
The appliance fitter, Mr. Paulding of Messrs. A. E. Cox Ltd., now calls each week
to measure patients at the clinic for surgical shoes, splints and belts.
Our usual Christmas party was held on 17th December when over 120 patients
attended, and a very enjoyable time was had by all. Various patients and relations very
kindly gave us presents of cakes, fruit etc.”
