Health Education in Schools
It is pleasing to note that an increasing number of head teachers are availing themselves
of the facilities offered by the Health Department. Two schools were supplied
with literature to assist their staff in teaching a variety of health topics. In two others
Health Department staff provided talks illustrated by films and in another a talk on the
work of the public health inspector.
An interesting new project was an experiment in providing a co-ordinated course in
health topics for a secondary school. After many discussions with the headmaster and
teaching staff, arrangements were made for members of the Health Department Staff
and the St. John Ambulance Brigade to give a series of four talks on home safety and
first aid. These were to be followed by a series on clean food, and other topics in the
new year. If these are found to be useful a complete health education programme will
be incorporated in the curriculum for the academic year 1963/4.
Films and Filmstrip Production
Once again Messrs Camera Talks Ltd., requested our assistance in the production
of a filmstrip entitled "Medico-Social Centre for the Over Sixties." This was filmed
at the Oxlow Lane Clinic. It has recently been distributed and received favourable
comment from the technical press.
With the co-operation of the mothers concerned, work has commenced on a film
showing various stages of child development. Two sequences were shot, one showing
three different babies at approximately 27 weeks and the second showing the same babies
when 46 weeks old.
In spite of the large number of film strips available on the subject of food hygiene
we were unable to find one which exactly met our needs for the various courses which we
run. It was therefore decided to produce a series of colour transparences to illustrate
the points we wish to make. During 1962 these were prepared within the department and
are now used to illustrate food hygiene lectures.
Continued difficulties with the Film Society, including the loss of some negative,
prevented the Health Department film from being completed during 1962. However,
as the appropriate portions have now been re-shot it is hoped that the finished print will
soon be available.

The following talks were given during 1962 by various members of the staff:
