Births
The total of 1,527 live births notified during the year shows a decrease from the total
of 1,625 recorded in 1961, but is similar to the numbers for 1960 (1,518) and 1959, (1,528).
The corrected birth rate per thousand population was 13.25, compared with 18.0 for
England and Wales. Although there are fluctuations from year to year the general trend
of the birth rate since the mid 1950's has been in an upward direction. This is in keeping
with the national trend.
The illegitimate birth rate remains low, being 5.30 per cent of total live births, but
has shown a tendency to rise during the past few years.
The stillbirth rate was 22.41 per 1,000 total live and stillbirths. This is higher than
the 1 ate for 1961 (15.15) but less than that for i960 (24.42).
