Food Hygiene Regulations, 1955
The following letter, together with a statement on the main
provisions of the regulations, was sent to each food trader in the
Borough:—
"The increase in cases of food poisoning throughout the
country during the past few years have given cause for concern
and attempts have been made to reduce the numbers by
introducing new legislation.
"As you are no doubt aware, new food hygiene regulations
have been introduced, some of which came into effect on
January 1st of this year and others are to come into effect on
July 1st.
"It is only by close co-operation that these regulations
can be made to work smoothly and to the best advantage.
"Attached is a general statement about the main provisions
of the new regulations which we trust you will find
helpful. It is emphasised that this statement is only a summary
and you will be well advised to purchase a copy of the
regulations (they may be obtained from H.M. Stationery
Office or any stationers, price 6d.).
"The District Sanitary Inspectors during their routine
visits will consider the points with you, but if you wish to
raise any matters with us direct we will be prepared to discuss
them with you."
At a meeting arranged by the Chamber of Trade the Chief
Inspector discussed the regulations with the local traders.
The traders have generally co-operated well and the inspectors
have spent considerable time in explaining to individual occupiers
their responsibilities under the regulations.
Two certificates of exemption have been granted during the
year.
Milk
Under the provisions of the Milk and Dairies Regulations,
1949, eight premises are registered as dairies and 74 persons with
premises in the Borough are registered as distributors. 77 visits
were paid to these premises.
During the year 61 samples of milk were submitted for
bacteriological examination ; all were satisfactory.
The Chairman of the Public Health Committee (Alderman
Mrs. A. E. Prendergast) is a local authority representative on the
Milk Sub-Committee of the Essex County Agricultural Executive
Committee.
