Births.
1,501 live births were registered during the year, there being
754 males and 747 females. There is a decrease of total births
from 1,672 in 1954 to 1,501. The corrected birth rate per thousand
population was 11.81 compared with 15.0 for England and Wales.
The illegitimate birth rate continues to be very low, being
only 3.53 per cent. of total live births. The rate of illegitimate
stillbirths is 5.55 per cent. of total stillbirths.

Of the 243 deaths of non-residents occurring in the district, 220
took place at Rush Green Hospital.
Of the 364 deaths of local residents taking place outside this
area, most occurred in institutions. Of these 217 occurred at
Oldchurch Hospital; 20 at King George Hospital; 19 at the London
Hospital and Annexe; seven at the Ilford Isolation Hospital;
seven at Harold Wood Hospital; six at St. Joseph's Hospice and
five at the Victoria Hospital, Romford.
The crude death rate of 6.88 when corrected becomes 11.28
and compares with 11.7 for England and Wales.
