Births.
1,796 live births were registered during the year, there being
927 males and 869 females. There is an increase of total births
from 1,708 in 1952 to 1,796. The corrected birth rate per thousand
population was 14.33 compared with 15.5 for England and Wales
and 17.0 for the 160 large towns, including London, and is the
same as that for 1952.
The illegitimate birth rate continues to be very low, being
only 3.62 per cent. of total births. The rate of illegitimate stillbirths
is 2.63 per cent. of total stillbirths

Deaths of residents 767
Of the 141 deaths of non-residents occuring in the district 10
took place at the Dagenham Hospital and 121 at Rush Green
Hospital.
Of the 334 deaths of local residents taking place outside this
area, most occurred in institutions. Of these 193 occurred at
Oldchurch Hospital; 16 at King George Hospital; 16 at the London
Hospital; nine at the Ilford Isolation Hospital; seven at Harold
Wood Hospital; five at the Barking Hospital; four at St. Joseph's
Hospice; four at Victoria Hospital, Romford; four at Whipps Cross
Hospital and four infants at the East End Maternity Hospital.
The crude death rate of 6.72, when corrected becomes 11.02
and compares with 11.4 for England and Wales.
