INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
Legal Proceedings.
(a) A sample of minced meat was purchased from a
local butcher who was suspected of selling horseflesh.
The sample was submitted to the Ministry's Regional
Pathologist who reported that his examinations revealed
the presence of a large percentage of horseflesh.
Legal proceedings were instituted. Fines totalled
£150 together with £10 10s. costs.
(b) An uncovered box of cooking fat grossly contaminated
with dust and mice excreta was found in the
basement of a confectioner's shop. The facts were reported
to the local Food Executive Officer and proceedings
were taken by the Corporation under the Food and
Drugs Act and also by the Food Control Committee.
Defendants were fined in all £24 and £10 10s. costs.
Slaughterhouses.
Arrangements were made early in the year for a
District Sanitary Inspector to be loaned to a neighbouring
Borough one day per fortnight to carry out meat inspection
at the Regional Slaughterhouse. This procedure was
found necessary because of the shortage of Inspectors in
this Borough and the failure to obtain additional wholetime
staff.
