Of the 117 deaths of non-residents occurring in the
district, 57 took place at the West Ham Sanatorium, 46
at the Joint Isolation Hospital and 15 at Hainault Lodge.
Of the 390 deaths of local residents taking place outside
this area, most occurred in institutions. Of these
167 occurred at Oldchurch Hospital, 23 at 48, Wood
Street, Chelmsford, 15 at Orsett Lodge, 10 at Warley
Hospital, 10 at the London Hospital, nine at King
George Hospital, eight at Severalls Mental Hospital,
eight at 32a, Spital Road, Maldon, six at New Hall,
Boreham, six at Harold Court Sanatorium, six at The
Retreat, Billericay, five at Brookside, Barley Lane, Goodmayes,
four at IIford Isolation Hospital, four at Black
Notley Sanatorium and four at the Essex County Hospital,
Broomficld.
755 deaths are equivalent to a death rate of 8.51
compared with 12.9 for England and Wales. For the
years from 1927 to 1940 inclusive, the local rates were 7.0,
7.3, 8.3,' 6.6, 7.2, 6.5, 6.5, 6.6, 5.63, 6.43, 6.24,
6.19, 5.96 and 8.90.
