Legal Proceedings.
(a) Two boneless carcases of beef were found by the
local Food Enforcement Officer on hotel premises. The
Sanitary Inspectors were called in, but before their
inspection was completed, the meat was requisitioned by
the Area Meat Agent, and taken into an adjacent district.
The meat was subsequently condemned as unfit
for human consumption. Proceedings under the Food
and Drugs Act were instituted but failed, as the meat
had not been condemned by a Justice of the Peace. It
was pointed out during the proceedings that when the
meat was requisitioned, it became the property of the
Crown, and therefore could not be seized.
(b) Two sides of beef were found by the Sanitary
Inspectors on premises licensed for the sale of horseflesh
only. The facts were reported to the local Food Executive
Officer, who instituted proceedings, and obtained a
conviction (total fines £100).
(c) A quantity of beef and horseflesh (12 cwts.) was
found on a butcher's premises, and was seized and condemned
as unfit for food. A portion of the beef (3 boned
hindquarters and 3 boned forequarters) had been coloured
green, but not in the prescribed manner. Proceedings
were taken (costs and fines £150).
Food and Drugs Act, 1938.
The following table summarises samples of various
foods taken under this Act, together with those found
to be adulterated or otherwise not complying with the
provisions of the Act.
As in the previous year, Doctors Bernard Dyer and
