Of the 360 deaths of local residents taking place
outside this area, most occurred in institutions. Of
these, 166 occurred at Oldchurch Hospital, 39 at Suttons
Institution, 10 at King George Hospital, Hford, 14 at
Essex County Hospital, Wanstcad, 7 at Warley Hospital,
7 at The Retreat, Billericay, 6 at The Hospital for Sick
Children, 6 at Orsett Institution, 6 at London Hospital,
5 at Severalls Mental Hospital, 4 at East End Maternity
Hospital, 4 at St. Joseph's Hospice and 4 at Black
Notley Sanatorium.
6*23 deaths in a population of 104,500 represent a
death rate of 5.96 compared with 12.1 for England and
Wales. For the years from 1927 to 1938 inclusive, the
local rates were 7.0, 7.3, 8.3, 6.6, 7.2, 6.5, 6.5, 6.6, 5.63,
6.43, 6.24 and 6.19.
