The illegitimate birth rate continues to be very
low, being only 2.58 per cent, of total births. The rate
of illegitimate stillbirths is 1.67 per cent, of total
stillbirths.

Deaths of residents 668
Of the 118 deaths of non-residents occurring in the
district, 50 took place at the West Ham Sanatorium,
23 at the Joint Isolation Hospital, 28 at Hainault Lodge
and four at Storrington Nursing Home.
Of the 403 deaths of local residents taking place
outside this area, most occurred in institutions. Of
these, 225 occurred at Oldchurch Hospital, 28 at Orsett
Institution, 14 at the London Hospital. 13 at King George
Hospital, seven at St. Peter's Hospital, seven at Epping
Institution, six at St. Andrew's Hospital, six at Severalls
Mental Hospital, six at Brentwood Mental Hospital, five
at the London Fever Hospital, four at St. Joseph's
Hospice, and four at Queen Mary's Hospital, Stratford.
665 deaths in a population of 107,400 represent a
death rate of 6.19 compared with 11.6 for England and
Wales. For the years from 1927 to 1937 inclusive, the
local rates were 7.0, 7.3, 8.3, 6.6, 7.2, 6.5, 6.5, 6.6, 5.63,
6.43 and 6.24.
