(9) The child attends the Infant Welfare Centre and
is seen by the Doctor at the Clinic monthly.
(10) The home is visited by the Health Visitor monthly,
irrespective of attendance at the Infant Welfare Centre.
Surprise visits are also paid to the home.
(11) Day Foster Mothers notify the Public Health
Department as soon as possible after the child is
removed from her care.
(12) Mothers are discouraged from going out to work
except in cases of financial difficulties.
(13) The services of Day Foster Mothers can be utilised
in special circumstances on single days, for instance,
if a mother has to attend hospital or on other similar
occasions.
As far as is known, this Council is the first of any
in the country to operate a scheme on these lines.
Being an innovation, it was submitted in detail to the
Minister of Health, who intimated his approval. Considering
the short period of its operation, the use being
made of the scheme is distinctly encouraging, and it
appears that it is justified.
Maternity Homes.
There are no Maternity Homes in the district, but
one Nursing Home which is licensed to receive eight
medical or chronic cases has been established in
Whalebone Lane.
The Minister of Health, has, by Circular 1433, issued
in October, 1934 and by Circular 1622 dated May, 1937,
suggested that new maternity homes should not be
established unless they are in association with general
hospitals.
