MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
Notification of Births.
1,852 notifications of live births were received
during the year.
192 notifications (including stillbirths) were
received from medical practitioners and parents and
1,246 from mid wives.
Information was received of 462 births outside this
area. The following list shows where most of these
took place:— East End Maternity Hospital 251, Oldchurch
Hospital 93, Charing Cross Hospital 22, Plaistow
Maternity Hospital 22, Queen Mary's Hospital, Stratford
11 and The London Hospital 9.
The Notification of Births Acts have now been
repealed by Section 203 of the Public Health Act, 1936.
Illegitimate births accounted for 1.72 per cent, of
the total births.
Stillbirths.
33 male and 15 female stillbirths were notified, the
corresponding figures for registration being 39 and 22.
I he rate per 1,000 of total population registered was
0.58, the rate for England and Wales being 0.60. The
percentage of illegitimate stillbirths to the total was
3.28 compared with a percentage of illegitimate to total
births of 1.72.
The stillbirths which occurred in the district, the
alleged causes and other associated details are shown
in the table.
Infant Mortality.
104 infants under one year of age died during the
vear, giving an infant mortality rate of 52.71 per 1,000
live births, compared with that of 58 for England and
