Legal Proceedings.
The owner of a terrace of eight houses in this
district was summoned at a Court of Summary Jurisdiction
for failing to comply with Statutory Notices
under Section 94 of the Public Health Act, 1875, in
respect of the houses. The case was adjourned sine die
on an undertaking by the defendant to complete the
necessary work within 14 days.
A Closing Order was made in respect of part of a
house, the remainder of which was used for business
purposes. The tenant appealed on the grounds (a) that
he was not notified of the time and place when the
condition of the premises would be considered, (b) that
part of the building was fit for human habitation and
alternatively (c) that it could be made fit for human
habitation at a reasonable cost. The grounds of appeal
as specified in (a) above were based on the claim that
the occupier was a protected tenant under the Rent
Restrictions Act. After hearing legal arguments for
both parties the Judge dismissed the Appeal with
costs.
Houses Let in Lodgings.
At the end of the year there were 20 premises
registered as houses let in lodgings to which 75 visits
were paid.
Verminous Premises.
16 Dagenham Council houses and 106 other
premises were found to be infested with bugs. 14
Council houses and 98 other premises, making a total
of 112, were disinfested by this Department.
